As of Saturday morning, October 31, 2009, Interstate 80 westbound from Ogallala to the Wyoming state line remained closed, as did Highway 30. The closure is due to extreme weather conditions in Wyoming. Eastbound Interstate 80 and Highway 30 are open.
“At this time there is nowhere for westbound traffic to go,” said Major Russ Stanczyk, Nebraska State Patrol Field Services Commander. “Once our counterparts west are able to open up safely, we will get motorists on their way. We appreciate everyone’s patience as road crews’ deal with some very difficult winter weather.”
Motorists are advised to utilize the state’s 511 automated road and weather condition information system before heading out. By dialing 511 from any landline or cellular phone, motorists will be able to gauge how the weather is affecting travel conditions. The system can also be accessed via the internet at < www.511nebraska.org >. Travelers outside of Nebraska wanting to check weather and road conditions can dial 1-800-906-9069.
Motorists in need of emergency roadside assistance should dial the Nebraska State Patrol Highway Helpline when safe to do so, at *55 from any cellular phone or 1-800-525-5555 from any landline.
