Separate Semi - Car Crashes Claim Three Lives

(Lincoln, NE)- Two separate crashes involving semi trailer trucks have claimed the lives of three people in the past two days.

The first crash occurred shortly before 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2009, on Interstate 80 about a mile east of the Minden Interchange.   A westbound semi trailer truck crossed the median and struck an eastbound 1995 blue, Oldsmobile.   The semi caught fire after rolling and ending up on its side in the south ditch.  The car which was struck near the driver’s side door ended up on its side in the south ditch.   The driver of the car 68-year old David McLeod of Kearney and a passenger in the vehicle 43-year old Jami McLeod of Bremerton, Washington were both killed in the crash.   The driver of the semi, 36-year-old David Crouch of La Vista, Nebraska was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, where he was treated and released.   The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The second crash claimed the life of a 24-year old Merna man.   Jonathan Jacobsen was killed when the car he was driving rear-ended a semi trailer truck on Highway 2 approximately one mile east of Merna, in Custer County, Nebraska.   The crash occurred just after midnight on Friday, August 14, 2009.  Both the car and the trailer of the semi caught fire.  Jacobsen was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the semi, both from Avondale, Arizona were treated and released for smoke inhalation at a Broken Bow Hospital.

“This is a very heavy travel period on our states’ roadways,” said Troop C Commander Captain Chris Kolb.  “As we approach the end of the summer travel season, motorists can expect to share the road with a lot of other people.  We would remind all travelers to use extra caution, always wear their seat belts, obey the posted speed limit, and never drive impaired.”
