Trooper Ted  says Hi!

Trooper Ted, and his trooper helper, travel around the state of Nebraska talking about safety and good choices.

Below, there are some suggestions for safe choices while on the internet and also while you are with friends and family.

You can ask an adult friend to contact one of Trooper Ted's trooper helpers if you have questions about safety, or if you would like Trooper Ted to visit your school or club.

MY FIVE RULES FOR INTERNET SAFETY

1.   I will not give personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents work address/telephone number; or the name and location of my school without my parents permission.

2.   I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents.  If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.

3.   I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.

4.   I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable.  It is not my fault if I get a message like that.  If I do, I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the online service.

5.   I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online.  We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online, and appropriate area for me to visit.  I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.

MY EIGHT RULES FOR GENERAL SAFETY

1.  Before I go anywhere, I will always check first with my parents or the person in charge.  I will tell them where I am going, how I will get there, who will be going with me, and when I'll be back.

2.  I will check first for permission from my parents before getting into a car or leaving with anyone - even someone I know.  I will check with my parents before changing plans or accepting money, gifts, or drugs.

3.  It is safer for me to be with other people when going places or playing outside.  I will always use the "buddy system".

4.  I say NO if someone tries to touch me in ways that make me feel frightened, uncomfortable, or confused.  Then I go and tell a trusted grown-up what happened.

5.  I know it is not my fault if someone touches me in a way that is not okay.  I do not have to keep secrets about those touches.

6.  I trust my feelings and talk to grown-ups about problems that are too big for me to handle on my own.  A lot of people care about me and they will listen and believe me.  I am not alone.

7.  It is never too late to ask for help.  I can keep asking until I get the help I need.

8.  I am a special person, and I deserve to feel safe.  My rules are:

  • CHECK FIRST
  • USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM
  • SAY NO, THEN GO TELL
  • TALK WITH A TRUSTED GROWN-UP ABOUT MY PROBLEMS
