Nebraska State Patrol Unit Struck by Drunk Driver

(Lincoln, NE) – A 25-year-old Omaha woman was cited for Driving Under the Influence after the car she was driving slammed into the rear of a Nebraska State Patrol cruiser.

Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, February 17, 2008, a Trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol was working a traffic stop near 102nd & Maple Streets in Omaha, when his vehicle was struck from behind by a maroon 2003, Dodge Neon driven by 25-year-old Amber Baker of Omaha.  The Trooper and the person he had stopped were standing in the median and were not inside the cruiser when it was struck.  Neither the Trooper nor the person he had pulled over was injured.

The driver of the Dodge Neon, Amber Baker and a passenger in her vehicle were transported to Immanuel Hospital in Omaha.  The passenger was treated and released.   Baker, was hospitalized with minor injuries.   She was cited for DUI and Open Container.  The accident was investigated by the Omaha Police Department.

“We are very fortunate there weren’t any life threatening injuries associated with this crash,” said Troop A Captain Tom Schwarten.  “This incident is proof that no one is immune to the dangers associated with drinking and driving.  We must all do our part to keep impaired drivers off our roadways.”

The Nebraska State Patrol encourages motorists to report suspected impaired drivers.   Motorists who observe a drunk or reckless driver, can dial *55 on any cellular phone or 1-800-525-5555 for assistance.
