(Lincoln, NE) – On Thursday, January 17, 2008, eight Troopers with the Carrier Enforcement Division of the Nebraska State Patrol conducted a special selective utilizing the Interstate 80 scales near Waverly as well as portable scales on surrounding Highways in Lancaster & Cass Counties. 26 citations and 46 total violations were written resulting in $2,900.00 in fines. During the selective 777 trucks were weighed and Troopers conducted nine truck inspections. The selective targeted those vehicles that operated on secondary highways to avoid the Interstate Scales. Unless a vehicle has a special permit from the Nebraska Department of Roads, vehicle(s) are not allowed to exceed 80,000 lbs. gross weight on the interstate system. During the selective Troopers cited seven such vehicles for exceeding the 80,000 lb. gross weight on the interstate system. Three trucks were taken out of service. Vehicles are placed out of service for violations relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that pose immediate safety risks. Nine drivers were also taken out of services (not allowed to continue driving), for log book violations (7), Possession of Marijuana less than one Ounce (1) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (1). The Carrier Enforcement Division operates both stationary weigh stations and portable units across the state to prevent destructive use of highways and bridges in order to preserve the state’s infrastructure.
